What is stopping YOU from estate planning?
Hello, I’m Leslie Sultan. I am an estate planning attorney in New York. Have you found that you want to do an estate plan or a will, but something is holding you back? I have seen a lot of clients held back by the concept of urgency versus importance. In other words, we tend to do things that are urgent but not important before we do things that are important but not urgent. Estate planning tends to fall into the important but not urgent category. So, we put it off.
And then there is the cost.
Maybe you don’t know what it costs? Or you think that the cost might be too expensive?
The first thing to do is find out if there is a flat fee. Most attorneys charge flat fees for estate planning; however, you can always ask an attorney if they will take a payment plan. A payment plan will allow you to make payments over the time of the drafting process, which can be time consuming: there is an interview questionnaire planning phase, a drafting phase, and finally a signing phase. This is usually enough time for folks to complete their payment plan.
Find an Attorney that you can trust.
Have you ever tried to contact an attorney and received no response? Unfortunately, attorneys are notorious for this. When you are looking for an attorney, you want to find someone who focuses on customer service. Take your time to find someone who is going to be supportive of you. Finding a reliable attorney who calls you back is going to be the first step in knowing that they are going to be there for you and your family. Once you find a supportive attorney, you will be able to help move this process into the important category that gets it done.
